Denne are to build 40 sustainable and affordable homes in the coastal town of Hove, East Sussex on behalf of Southern Housing Group.
Southern Housing Group, one of country’s largest housing associations, which owns and manages over 25,000 properties for more than 66,000 residents, awarded the contract to Denne following an OJEU tender process.
Denne will commence construction in August 2011 and will create 13 one bedroom, 15 two bedroom and 12 three bedroom apartments, all of which will be available for eithersocial, intermediate or market rent.
The development will be constructed using a concrete frame solution with a combined heat and power system running central boilers. There are also plans to utilise solar photovoltaic panels on the roof for electricity generation. This use of renewable technologies means that the development is targeted to achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. The scheme will also include a basement car park together with associated drainage and services as well as external hard and soft landscaping.
The development has been designed to fit comfortably in its coastal setting with external aesthetics retaining reference to the previous art deco showroom that was demolished by the previous owners in 2004.
A focal point of the development is the inclusion of inset balconies that are private and sheltered from the wind, creating sun parlours, which are a popular feature of properties on the Hove seafront.
Graham Brown, Managing Director, Denne said: “We are pleased to be continuing our established relationship with Southern Housing Group by constructing this development of both sustainable and affordable housing in Hove. Denne has built an enviable reputation for constructing much needed housing, built to the highest standards, using sustainable technologies and this project fits directly with that philosophy.”
Southern Housing Group Regional Land Buyer, Colin Thomas, said “We are delighted to be able to deliver much-needed affordable homes in Hove. The homes reach high sustainability and design standards and the maritime art-deco influence has proved popular with both the planning authority and local residents. We are pleased that Denne will build this prominent scheme for the Group.”
Denne will continue its award winning work within the community by implementing the HCA Employment and Skills Guidance. Through its Employment and Skills strategy, Denne aims to provide five apprenticeships, six work placements and associated training courses and activities to local schools, colleges and residents in Hove.
The project is due for completion by Winter 2012.
